Have you ever been bored by endless discussions about a technical topic within your team? Have you ever felt that you weren’t able to decide what to do next with a problem?

In this session we would like to work with you on solutions regarding bad communication in meetings and look at different approaches for efficient problem solving.

In preparation it would be useful if participants could think about behaviours or situations that prevented them from constructively discussing solutions for problems of any kind.

Having a decent light show as an upcoming band is a struggle. Our band MEGA! MEGA! faced that problem with tech by building a midi controlled, programmable light system on a budget. We wanted to build a simple LED Logo but ended up developing our own backing track and light sequencer to synchronize sound and light. We call it MEGA STAGE.

Hop on the band van!

If you want to see the setup in action come to the MEGA! MEGA! concert in the movebox at 6:30 pm!

From ML Research to Production - the Autobahn Way!

Germany is at the forefront of Machine Learning (ML) research in Europe whether it is published papers or issued patents in the past decade. As a consequence, theoretically you would expect a lot of ML in our products across all industries and a certain maturity of the field in Germany. The reality is however different. ML is a “Neuland” for many companies here and we are not good at taking state-of-the-art research results into production. In this talk, we will present why this is the case and then show some recipes that we use at Axel Springer AI to solve this problem.

Training a Machine to See What’s Beautiful (esp. for Hotel Photos)

We’ve all heard that “a picture is worth a thousand words”. That definitely applies to our hotel price comparison service hotel.idealo.de, a daughter company of Axel Springer. Each hotel supplies us with dozens of images, presenting us with the challenge of choosing the most “attractive” image for each pitch on our offer comparison pages since photos can be just as important for bookings as reviews. Given millions of hotel offers, we end up with more than 100 million images which require an “attractiveness” assessment.
